Serene and graceful, this wonderful Black Forest holy water font features large grapevine leaves (or maybe ivy) entwined along a beautifully wrought cross and base. The leaves have broad, smooth planes with precisely carved veins that accentuate their angular shape.
The font is carved with beautiful oval-shaped sections, each filled with individual sweeping lines for dramatic effect. I love the illusion of the "crossbeam" connecting the font to the cross. Also interesting is the effect at the top of the cross. It looks like round sticks have been covered with thorny bark, evoking Christ's crown of thorns.
This wonderful religious treasure is likely from the early 1900s and is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, splits or gouges of any kind. I don't know if the font ever had an insert, but you could always put a small piece of air fern in it to accentuate its organic design.
This is a great opportunity to own a fine Black Forest carving that supports your faith and your finances. It would make an exciting and thoughtful gift as well.
