As I reflected on all the strife in our world, I was inspired to create this Peace Chaplet... a much-needed Catholic devotional that can serve as a point of light and reparation.
Also known as the Workers' Rosary and the Old Yugoslavian Grandmother’s Peace Chaplet, this devotional is widely used for its simplicity and purpose: prayers for world peace among and within nations; within communities, families and marriages; and within our own heart. It is believed to have originated in Croatia in the early 1900s where it has been prayed and handed down for generations, and is now associated with the Marian apparitions at Medjugorje.
This particular interpretation is hand-crafted using vintage and antique components that hold a particular significance or energy. The vintage white glass beads represent peace and purity. Because they are caged in brass wire, their energy is potential, reminding us that we must consciously choose to express peace in order to release its power.
The twisted figure-8 links remind me of the symbol for infinity... limitless and eternal, like the energies of peace and love. “As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end.” Both the cages and links have spots of verdigris and oxidation, attesting to their age.
At the center is a vintage gilded medal with a profile of Mary. Her countenance is youthful and innocent, yet her authority reigns supreme as Queen of Heaven. The verso is blank but for a garland of flowers, and is suitable for engraving.
The brass mandorla-shaped medal holds special significance as the world focuses on recent events in France. This lovely antique depicts Notre Dame de France on the face... an enormous metal statue of a crowned Madonna and Child, erected in 1860, second in size only to the Statue of Liberty, which is the largest statue in the world. Located in LePuy, France, it sits upon a massive volcanic rock and towers almost 2,500 feet above sea level.
The verso depicts a statue of Notre Dame de Puy, which can be found in a nearby shrine high in the Jura Mountains. It’s hard to tell, but the shrine is also depicted. Le Puy claims to be the location of the earliest vision of the Blessed Virgin after her death, when she appeared to a sick woman in the first century AD. All knights and crusaders passed way this on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, bidding farewell to Our Lady and asking her to care for their loved ones should they not return.
Both images have heavy devotional smoothing and are more suggestive than detailed. It is my hope that the prayerful fervor imbued by its previous owners will inspire and ignite our own efforts toward peace and divine protection.
With such a great need for peace in our world, consider adding this short and easy-to-pray chaplet to your religious devotions. Comes with complete prayer instructions and is boxed and ready for gift-giving.
