Chatelaine Lucky 13 Charm Chatelaine Two Enamel
A rare 800 silver chatelaine charm ring dating to the early 1900's with "lucky 13" in the number of charms that hang, including one charm that is the number 13 itself. They all hang from chains of different lengths from a central ring. They are made with chains of different lengths so that they will graduate and fall in different positions when they hang. These chatelaines with 13 charms when they are found vary in the charms they are composed of, but often share many of the same ones. Some of the charms on this chatelaine appear to be definitely French but the chatelaines often include the Italian Gobo good luck hunchback among them also, as this one does. This chatelaine has two rare enamel charms. There is one charm missing from one chain so it is incomplete with only 12 charms, but one could of course be added at a later date when the new owner decides what would be the right addition. The highlight of the chatelaine are the two enamel charms. One is a guilloche four leaf clover. It has a shallow chip on one of the petals that is barely very noticeable. The other is a red-purple wild flower disc charm with a pale yellow background. I am not familiar with the species of the flower but it has thistle like stems. The charms contain several puffy charms that are all similar in a style that I have since seen in other examples of these chatelaines. They include a pretty stylized acorn with swirling cap, a pine cone with sharp repousse scales and what is either an almond or possibly an angel's wing. There is a puffy shoe, another charm that is often found on these chatelaines. This one is a worn, patched leather shoe with great detail, also seen in different versions on these lucky 13 chatelaines. This shoe has stitching on the leather patch that has repaired one side and spikes on the sole. There is a hammered silver bell with a clapper inside and spikes on the sides, an unusual version of the bell charm that is often included among the 13. There is, of course, the number 13 itself. There is an open clam shell that is well formed and has a little silver "pearl" on the inside, also a staple. There is an antique coin that you can research and can be purchased as just a coin and the information offered about it states that it is most likely a faux ancient coin. This is yet another of the charms that is found on this chatelaine. The coin has Caesar on one side and a Roman face on the other with the words or name, Juliao Potivare. The Gobo is also very well made with great detail on both the front and the back. In fact, the back is almost more detailed than the front. There is also a horseshoe that appears may have a stone missing. The total weight is 34.6 grams. There is a large jump ring clasp that is attached to the ring on its attached bail. The hanging jump ring does not quite align when it closes and doesn't enter the tube on the other side but stays just on the edge of it. This could be easily adjusted by a jeweler or a new jump ring could be added. But as it is, it stays tightly shut and does not slip open so it appears to be usable as it is. The large ring measures 3/4" in diameter. The longest hanging chain is about 2 1/4" and the shortest, 1 3/4". It is marked 800 on the attached bail. With the exception of the one little chip on the clover charm and the missing stone on the horseshoe, all of the other charms are in perfect cosmetic condition with no flaws or even wear to the puffy glossy silver. The puffy almond or wing has a little tarnish that could be easily cleaned.
