This vintage English cross-stitch embroidery depicts a thatched roof cottage with a flower garden full of hollyhocks. It was worked by a young English girl named Pamela Lockley when she was about 10 years old. The work is excellent; the stitches are precise and even. The colors don't seem to be faded.
The scene is a traditional English thatched-roof house. A lovely English summer garden is full of hollyhocks and other bright flowers. This is reminiscent of needlework patterns made by Vogue in the 30's.
The piece was framed in the 1980's. It is a gilded frame with a blue wooden fillet or mat.
Written on the back, Made by me, Ethel Pamela Lockley when I was 10 (1935), Shropshire, England. Vintage excellent condition. The frame has several chips, some of which have been gilded over. I do not feel that they are distracting.
The frame measures about 12.5 inches x 10.
