For blocks of ice and large lumps of coal one may need the correct tool to fracture chunks. The Titus Ice and Coal Co. furnished just such a tool to its customers and prospects. This all-steel pick with a heavily weighted handle (five ounces; used as a mallet to break usable pieces from the larger blocks and chunks) comes to us via an estate in Oregon City (end of the Oregon Trail). Titus Ice and Coal was a company in Colorado in the late 1800's and following, according to "Ice and Refrigeration Blue Book and Buyers' Guide": 1909, Reprinted by Rare Books Club. The advertising handle embossing reads on respective sides "Polite Drivers", "Pure Products", "Pleased Customers", "Titus Ice & Coal".
This curious tool is a truly rare find, both for its type and age, for its company of origin and for its "migration" across the country to its homestead resting place on the Oregon frontier. Additionally, it is in excellent condition with delightful use patina. We believe you are highly unlikely ever to see another like it.
