"A Pocket Guide to New Guinea and the Solomons". A Post World War II United States soldier’s and sailor's orientation guide in preparation for operations in the South Pacific. This fascinating document from post-war era begins in its Introduction, “... New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are of the greatest importance to the United Nations. Everyone remembers only too well the grim days the Japs spread out like a swarm of locusts over the peaceful Philippines and East Indies ... jungle fighters finally stopped them in the New Guinea mountains.”
The booklet covers everything from the rationale for regional occupation to the traits of the native people, a soldier's conduct, local languages and governmental practices, cultural, climatic and topographical conditions. Of particular interest is the mindset or point-of-view of the writers which comes through clearly. We've given you a variety of samples from the text -- there's much more content. We find this piece quite illuminating about this critical period of world and US political / military history; we hope you will too.

Format: 4.25 by 5.25 inches; 84 pages, saddle stitched with two staples. Prepared by Special Services Division, Army Service Forces, US Army; published by War and Navy Departments, Washington, D.C.. Condition: The document is complete and fully intact. It shows very little wear. Inscribed on the title page by hand “Thomas O. Spilling”, who was inducted into the US Army in August, 1942 and returned from the Pacific theater of operations in 1945 after Japan's surrender.
