Glaze and form come together perfectly in this 1920 Rookwood console bowl with arching loop handles. The glaze flows thickly in multi shades of deep blue and hints of green. Semi-gloss and highly textured this piece has a luscious Arts & Crafts feel. The mottling and stippling of the interior add interest. The three slightly twisting handles arch above a subtle shoulder. Nearly volcanic flowing glaze (ala Hampshire or Grueby) is cleanly ground off the ring foot. This is a very substantial piece, weighing almost three and one-half pounds -- the high fire body has the "tink" of porcelain (testimony to superior crafting so typical of Rookwood's best work). This is Rookwood at its richest, finest work for non-artist-decorated pieces. Marked with customary Rookwood cipher, XX and 1221. Dimensions: About 10 inches diameter by 3 inches tall. Condition: Excellent; we find no damage or use wear at all and the glaze work is virtually flawless.
