Stunning signed antique gilted Art Nouveau Bronze Bust of a young woman. The young woman with a large hat has an expressive gesture, beautiful face and with red enameled cherries in her mouth. Her elaborate dress flows like a sculpted wave. Near the base are more enameled red cherries and green enameled leaves. The Bronze is signed by George van der Straeten (Belgian, 1856-1928). Beneath the signature is the Seal of the Societe Des Bronzes De Paris. It's in beautiful condition with some chips to the enamel. It stands 9 1/4" tall on a reddish-brown base, which is most likely Marble (green felt on the bottom added later). Her sensual features and coy smile with her shoulder exposed would have been considered risque for the period, done around the same time as Sargent's (scandalous) painting of Madame X with her slipped strap and exposed shoulder. This Bronze Bust is a three dimensional beauty----the sculpture brilliantly uses the female figure and dress to show off his remarkable sense of design, visual skills and craftsmanship. The lyrical, curved gesture of the figure, with her large hat and narrowing waist is a remarkably engineered and an outstanding example of Art Nouveau design. The antique Bronze Woman with Cherries in her mouth shows exceptionally well in the photos and even more remarkable in person. Almost all photographs were taken with a camera flash which brightens the aged patina. Vander Straeten was trained in Belgium and Paris and his work is considered the French School. (note: traces of tape residue on back side of marble base will be cleaned before shipping)
