Wonderful Antique Solid Silver Pill Box of Austro-Hungarian origin and dating to the early 19th Century. The antique Silver Box has a pretty design on the top of the box; a hatch linear design around the border (this design also repeats on the bottom of the box and a smaller variation around the borders of the sides). In the middle is a shield-like design with two period initials engraved inside. The Box opens on a hinge. Once opened, the hallmarks are revealed on the inside of the bevel of the box which is otherwise covered by the lid when closed (see photograph). The Box measures 2 1/8" x 1 1/8" x 5/8" high. Has heft and is beautifully made. The Box is in very good condition and the hinge is in very good working order. The exterior of the Box has normal wear, with some scratching. The interior of the Box has more scratching from the trinkets that were at one time kept inside. The photographs show the Box very well. Please view all photographs as full enlargements. While most likely this was a Pill Box when made, it's uses today are multiple. This could be used as a Hair Pin Box, Jewelry Box (for Rings, Cuffs, Stick Pins, Tie Clips, Earrings, Brooches, Necklaces, etc...). Can also be used as a Toiletry Box (for Q-tips, Cotton Balls, etc...) as well as a box for Shirt Stays Box, Paper Clip Box as well as certain size Business Card Box. Collectors and appreciators of early European Silver Boxes would enjoy such a piece, just for its beauty, history and craftsmanship alone.
