Quite large and exceptional, antique Victorian Brooch with a large faceted Amethyst in the center, dating to circa: 1870. The Amethyst is a rich deep purple color, prong set and proportioned beautifully with the equally gorgeous, wide, ornate 14K Gold frame. The frame (mounting) has varying levels of detail, including an etched black Enamel touches, scroll, botanical Leaves, open-work and raised areas. And note, the gold beading / gold balls along the top edge and bottom of the Brooch----tremendous workmanship. On the reverse side is a Return, so that a Watch, Tassel or other item may be hung from it. The safety catch was added at a later date. Some enameling has worn off over time. The Brooch is a substantial size, measuring 2 1/4" x 2". The piece was assayed to determine the carat at 14K. Is in very good condition and exactly as shown. Photographs were taken with and without a camera flash.
