Antique Civil War Era Portrait Of Captain Sampsons Wife
A nicely executed watercolor miniature portrait painting in a period ebonized frame. This Civil War era piece has a sticker on the back of the frame that states Mrs. Sampson wife of Captain Sampson (from Ina Cook) Civil War. There were a number of Sampson's in the Civil War some of which can be researched on line as having attained the rank of Captain. This one we believe was from the New England area, possibly Massachusetts. There is no visible artist's signature on the front of this piece and the back is sealed and covered with a gold/blue floral covered material with old nails that we chose not to disturb. The portrait is well preserved with limited colors used to create it. It is matted and under glass also. The frame is solid and quite nice with small chips to the ebonized surface in all four corners. Measurements are just over 4 by 5 inches art sight size and 9 by 10 inches framed.
