If you are sharp, you will see the maze of intricate workmanship that abounds in this petite example of Victorian head décor! Black patterned woven straw, silk ribbon. lace, jet beads exploding on tendrils of wire, and sprigs of who knows what, create a midnight rain forest of silhouette, texture and depth. It is elegant, mysterious, understated, discreet and very posh. This little treasure measures a mere 5" tall by 6" wide and 2 1/2" deep. The only fault that I see is that the straw at the back that arcs across the neck is slightly separating from the straw that makes up the back of the bonnet. This cannot be seen, but I do try to poke and prod to find any weakness. Considering the age and that black dyes of the era were quite corrosive, this delightful piece of frippery has fared well indeed. It is undoubtedly an adult fashion accessory - a bun covering of sorts, but Avrill is definitely not having any of that! She is 23" tall and you can see the bonnet fits her beautifully. Not for the fainthearted!
