About the maker: In 1875, enterprising businessman James W. Tufts open up shop in Boston selling fine silver-plated tableware and elaborate silver soda fountains. The use of silver plate rather than pure sterling silver meant that more people could afford to buy these items. There are many types of James W. Tufts silver, and these pieces vary according to their designs, markings, and the amount of silver used in their construction. Quadruple plate means four times the silver amount used for standard silver plate.
