Beautiful JPL Limoges pitcher/tankard with Roses, Factory Artist Signed, "Segur" Any collector of Limoges porcelain will immediately identify the distinctive style of one of the leading French artists of all time, "Segur". On his typical background of cream and bold shades of green, the artist has executed a cascade of pink and ruby roses on stem and leaf. The fancy scalloped border is decorated with embossed flourishes and blossoms, embellished with a band of rich roman gold. Paint colors are vibrant and strong. It bears the Jean Pouyat underglaze factory mark 5 in green that dates the blank from 1891-1932. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.
This is another bold and beautifully painted piece that is sure to enhance any fine porcelain collection. Pieces of this artist’s hand painted porcelain are pictured in every reference book on Limoges. See for example, page 198 of Antique Trade - Limoges Price Guide, as well as page 137 of Living with Limoges, two books by the leading expert in the field, Debby DuBay. Looking at Segur's pieces, It is easy to understand why he so rightfully deserves all the praise and why his items are so highly collectible and coveted. This is a marvelous piece by a gifted and listed artist that would be a fabulous addition to any collection. It is approximately 15" tall at the tallest point.
