This is an outstanding example of American carved rococo furniture, probably made in New York in the 1860's. It is an extremely rare example in that it is carved from American white oak. We have seen 3 almost identical examples of this piece made with rosewood with a marble top, two of which were identified as Meeks furniture, as we believe this to be. The shape and form of this etagere are extraordinary. The base and conforming shelves above are triple serpentine, i.e., each side and the center are separately serpentine in shape, as well as being very well molded, and on the base, they meet at fluted and fruit/scroll carved quarter columns. It has a large center drawer with a 10" wide wonderfully shell, scroll, and fruit carved escutcheon. To either side of this carving are fine c scroll carvings. At the bottom center of the base, there is extraordinary shell and scroll carving connected to c scroll carving which covers the front and sides of the base. The piece is supported on exceptionally well carved scrolled feet.
The top of the etagere has 2 triple serpentine conforming shelves supported by extraordinarily well carved, large c scrolls adorned with wonderful fruit and leaf carving almost 4" thick. Identical carving flanks the central mirror on both sides. The top of the piece is decorated with a 12" high similarly carved crest which includes wonderfully carved c scrolls, fruit and leaves.
This extraordinary carved American oak piece stands 82" tall, is 61" wide, and 29" deep at its center, and is one of the finest examples of the very best American oak furniture I have encountered in 35 years of searching. Additionally, its form, i.e., a carved etagere with cabinet base is truly a rare form, especially in oak.
Rubylane only allows 9 photos, which was not enough to capture the wonder of this etagere. I have many more should you need them. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have.
