This is, perhaps, the major carved oak eagle lectern in existence. It is large, heavy, exceptionally well carved, and in wonderful original condition. Additionally, if one reads Ezekiel (Chapter 1), and Revelations 4:6-9, the carving and its accompanying iconography and symbolism is truly amazing! The lectern is 71" tall to the wingtips, and 66" tall to the top of the eagles head. The wingspan is 27 1/2" The eagle is magnificently carved and feathered from the tip of his head to the top of his talons, which, incidentally, appear so realistic that our dogs won't go in the room with the lectern! The base is 22" in diameter and about 16" thick and heavily carved. The base includes the original ball and claw feet, as well as later ball casters to enable easier movement of the piece. The base has 14 carved circular rosettes located around the circumference which resemble inverted sunburst patterns. These are not applied, but rather carved directly into the wood. Above this area, equally spaced around the base are four 6 1/2" oval carvings depicting a winged lion, winged ox, winged man, and winged eagle. These wonderfully carved creatures are described in the biblical references cited above, and often are used to symbolize the 4 Evangelists, Matthew (man), Mark (Lion), Luke (ox) and John (eagle). Situated immediately above each of these symbols is a wonderfully carved 17" high, robed, bearded man with a book in his hand, which, one must assume, represent the 4 evangelists just mentioned. They are exceptionally well carved and life-like. These carvings are supported on the 4 1/2" diameter fluted shaft which connects the base to the 10" diameter sphere upon which the eagle is perched. There are several larger turned and carved areas on the shaft which contain nicely carved flowers. The book support at the top is 20" wide, 12" high, and 9" deep. It appears that at one time, the tip of the beak of the eagle was broken, but it has been very nicely recarved and is very nicely shaped. Simply, this lectern is one of the very best examples of the finest in carved American oak furniture. It is the finest we have ever seen, and its biblical connections and authenticity make it even more special.
