With a full face cameo portrait on either side of a stylized Egyptian lady, this bisque Jasperware Schafer & Vater German Hair Receiver dates from the turn of the century. Measuring 4" high with lid and about 3 1/3" at the widest center tapering to 2 1/2 diameter at base, the receiver is in the shape of a preserving jar and is signed with the Schafer & Vater crown or starburst and numbered either 4942 or 1942. In very good estate condition with the exception of a nick on the cover in the gold rim, it is well preserved. Hair receivers were used in Victorian times to collect hair from brushes to use in styling bouffant hair styles and in making mourning jewelry, and they were a necessary item on the vanity table.
