With hand chasing in an ornate repousse pattern of flowers and leaves, this incredible sterling silver vanity jar by Galt & Co. dates from 1879-1892. Free of monograms, it weighs over 3 troy ounces in silver, stands 2 1/2" high with a diameter of 2 1/2". In excellent estate condition, it is signed M W Galt Brothers & Co.,hallmarked with the Galt Hallmark, Sterling and numbered 7. The Galt Silver company operated out of Washington D.C.and had such famous patrons as Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and later Roosevelt. After passed down ownership of several generations, it closed in 2000.
