Schildkraut cigarette case from the Treasures of India collection. The design is zardozi goldwork medallion made in India with solid sterling silver wire thread and gold vermeil wire thread embroidered on genuine very rare white silk satin. Zardoz goldwork is an ancient highly skilled art form from India and surrounding areas like Pakistan and Iran. The raised 3-D design on this piece is hand-made with wire coils and springs and thread composed of sterling silver and gilt silver. Most pieces on white silk date from either just before WWII or from the early years of the war as silk became harder to obtain (it was used in parachutes). It comes in its original felt an plastic case. The embroidered top is in excellent condition but the metal bottom has some scuff. The clasp is strong and the original paper label is still in place. This is an extraordinary piece.
