This bracelet is one from a collection of "sparklies" that I recently purchased right from a collector who had been searching and hunting for decades. Since her daughter was getting married, she needed to sell her coveted collection of which you will see here first, exclusively in my shop, The Fair Mirror on Ruby Lane.
Right out of the Fabulous 50's is this vintage costume jewelry unsigned Weiss Stunning rhinestone & black thermoplastic clamper bracelet. Light just dances off all the three rows of brilliant blue round rhinestones!
This is just a fabulous piece, since the eggplant/black plastic is an unusual combination with the blue stones and front loading access. There are no dead or darkened stones. The bracelet is in perfect working order and the hinge is tight and snappy. On the back of the bracelet there are some minor scratches consistent with its age, also there is some slight color wear to the plastic but it does not affect the integrity or looks of this piece. This most likely, unsigned Weiss bracelet is Circa 1950. It will work well with Bakelite collections as well as lucite and celluloid too!
This gorgeous unsigned Rhinestone Clamper Thermoplastic Bracelet is likely made of polystyrene or cellulose acetate (both are thermoplastics - note these bracelets were not made of Bakelite - this according to Susan Klein, author of Mid-Century Plastic Jewelry.)
According to the author, the most interesting fact about these bracelets is that "the original ones were molded from umbrella handles. The company went to an umbrella handle manufacturer in Massachusetts to have the plastic pieces molded there. Weiss called them the 'Bon Bon' bracelet and produced them for about ten years. The bracelet measures nearly one (1) inch wide and 3/8 inch thick with an inner measurement of 2 1/2 inches. The clamper functions appropriately. Overall, the piece is in outstanding vintage condition making it a beautiful addition to your vintage jewelry collection.
