A masterpiece purse frame by William Hobe', circa 1940's, blends generous amounts of individually handset crystal & emerald Swarovski stones in varied shapes each in its own bezeled setting. All intertwined by hand-shaped filagree gilded wire. This handbag is a perfect shining example of the Hobe tag line: "Jewels Of Legendary Splendor." A luxurious mix of gathered black material and rhinestones elevates this unsigned guaranteed vintage evening bag from Hobe. The frame top opens to a black silk interior, gold leather piping and two card pockets. Black satin loop clutch handle at center top rear. The stones are brilliant and the frame is in excellent condition. It measures approx. 7 x 8" with the frame being a full 6 1/4" across and 2" at its widest point. Isn't it time you place one in your collection? (or lucky you: one more!)
William Hobe was a son of Jacques Hobe of Paris who earned the title of master goldsmith as one of the best fine jewelers in Europe. William came to New York to meet Florenz Ziegfeld, the producer of the Ziegfeld Follies, who asked him to create authentic looking well priced jewelry to go with their theatrical costumes. Without sacrificing fine workmanship or beauty he was able to do this and was thus launched. In the mid 1920s he founded a manufacturing company and by the mid 1940s was advertising as "Jewels of legendary splendor". Hobe quality and workmanship is considered by the majority of collectors to be the best.
