Lovely Art Deco "Flapper Era" sterling silver dance compact / purse by Waltrous Mfg Co. from the 1920s. This probably dates to the latter part of 1920's time period as engraving was typical of that period. The powder and rouge compartments still have their "cottony" dabbers, which are still intact. There is a clear clean mirror, free of scratches or ware. It is marked with a W which has a "inverted coma" hanging from the top of the W for Walrus Mfg. Co., the words Sterling and the #787 for the pattern is also stamped on the piece. The Waltrous Mfg. Co. located in Wallingford Connecticut began in 1896 and produced silver plated wares. In the 1920's they began their sterling silver line. The compact measures 3-1/4" in length by 2" at its widest point tapering down to 1-1/4". The adjustable sterling strap is 4-5/8" long. It is in excellent vintage condition with just some light surface wear from age and use. The closure is tight and shuts firmly. These compact purses are hard to find and especially in this condition. I have not cleaned it but would be happy to polish it with a polishing cloth if requested.
