This is a late Victorian sterling silver hinged box made in Birmingham England by silver smith Henry Mathews. This ornate hand hammered repousse floral design hinged box was possibly used as a vinaigrette or snuff box. Inside was gilt throughout in its prime. Remnants of gold wash are still evident on the inside of the piece being more prevalent on the lid. Box measures 3-1/8" long by 1" wide by 7/8" high. Condition is good antique. Shows signs of being well loved and used on the bottom with a few dings. I also noted 2 tiny holes by the center on the lid, one is just a tiny slit barely noticeable. Piece was monogrammed but the initials are almost rubbed out from age and use. Hallmarked in several places with the Birmingham, England lion and anchor. The date stamp is 1900 and maker was Henry Mathews (H M). Beautiful workmanship and a terrific example of an antique silver box for any collection.
