Our antique Victorian Pique Brown Shell 10K gold pierced earrings date to about 1870. This technique of inlaying gold and silver into brown shell was highly favored in England between 1850 - 1870.This pair has been embellished with gold flowers and garlands which has either lost touches of the gold pique or it is actually silver that has deepened. They are in amazing condition and have not been polished or cleaned. incorporating Flowers and leaves and circlets are incorporated in the design of open cut out shell.. The drops suspend from their original wires that test to be at least 10K gold.
The old Victorian style wires enter through the back of the ear lobe and fasten in the front. They can be worn with or without the drops and I would consider them to be day or night earrings. The wires are set with deep black stones that are faceted with a geodesic style cut. There is a small loop at the center of each cut out portion on the drop which may have at one time held a bead. The drops measure 1-1/2'' x 1-3/8'' and the pierced wires will display just below the earlobe with a 7mm stone. The earrings exhibit slight wear and are in amazing condition for their age.
