Here we have a very special antique cameo depicting the Archangel Gabriel. He was one of only two angels named in the Bible and is known for announcing the birth of Jesus Christ. He is seen here standing in the clouds which represent the fact that he is from heaven. His feminine winged form holds a lily in his left hand representing "Theotokos". The Greek term for Mary which translates to "To Give Birth".
This wonderful old cameo does show signs of it's age with crazing lines in the shell. It is grand in size at 2'' x 2-1/8''. The aged frame exhibits a deep patina and tests for silver but the pin stick appears to be brass. Despite the crazing this is a very special and beautiful piece.
