The snake has always been regarded as a symbol of eternity and through the years snake jewelry has been worn as betrothal jewelry. Queen Victoria herself wore a snake ring for her wedding. This stunning example of strength and devotion is crafted with the snake wrapping around the wrist with head and tail as a focal point. The head is enameled with Niello Enameling that does not continue throughout. I am not sure if it was intended to end that way.
Niello enameling is unusual and appealing. To create it's contrasting pattern, the silver is carved out and filled with an alloy of metals and the top polished smooth. It is beautifully done on this snakes head creating eyes and scales. There is also a pattern of Egyptian dessert symbols on the back. This sterling silver snake is an estate find that was tucked away for years. It really is a fantastic treasure.
The bracelet has an inner opening of 2-3/4'', a very generous size. It is 8mm at the head and 5mm at the back. With the exception of possible missing enameling it is in wonderful condition. I would date it from 1900 through the 1920s.
