This is a pair of antique school books. The first book is McGuffey's Eclectic Spelling Book Revised Edition, American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, c. 1879. Although the covers show significant wear and separation from the first page, the rest of the book is intact. There is a pencil inscription on the first page that reads "Nora Oliver's Book Bought Nov. 1892" and on the next page her name is inscribed twice with the date 1893, and on the inside of the back cover her name is once again inscribed. I am sure not every child could afford a school book back in those days. Her many inscriptions certainly indicate pride in ownership.
The second book is Ray's Arithmetic Second Book Ray's Intellectual Arithmetic, Van Antwerp, Bragg and Co., Cincinnati, New York, C. 1881. This book's back cover is warped and its front cover split at the first page. There are plenty of pencil marks on the blank pages. There is also a note attached on the inside that reads "Dr. W.L. Langford studied two of Ray's Arithmetic's like these". The pages of the text are still intact and free of any writing.
These would make a lovely addition to any antique book collection.
