This old book contains two books inside "Bound By A Spell" and "Slings and Arrows" by Hugh Conway (Frederick John Fargus). These were published by Ogilvie & Co. part of the Favorite Edition with their fine binding. Fargus was a British author and writer of words for stage songs. Some of his works were considered more like dime novels with mystery, the supernatural, and Gothic tendencies. Many of his works were published as serials in Bristol Times, Chamber's Journal, and Blackwood's. His books were also featured in Bristol's Christmas Annual. "Bound By A Spell" has a young man of mysterious birth fall into the hands of an unscrupulous teacher and his compromised daughter. He is compelled by foul means to marry the evil daughter. This is the story of his breaking free of their bondage, unraveling the mystery surrounding his birth and inheritance, and of his finding true love. In Arrows and Slings according to an internet review: "A young man loses his wife after she visits her solicitor. She leaves him with no explanations and only a cryptic note of farewell. It is a melodrama of mistaken identities, attempted murder, and love triumphant." This is illustrated. Interesting to note that after his death his widow claimed that he did not write "Bound By A Spell". His works published in books like this are difficult to find.
This book is app. 7.5"x5" with 185 pages in the first book and 158 in the second work. This is decorated cloth over hard boards with gilt. It is in good condition overall with some corner, edge, spine wear and bumping. There is some fading and soiling to the covers. The hinges are cracked so there is a little slop to the spine, but the binding is tight and all pages intact. The book is complete. There is tanning to the pages.
