This work is “A Life’s Mistake: Or Love’s Forgiveness” by Charles Garvice and printed by AL Burt & Co in 1892. This has the original dustjacket of a lovely lady and a prettily decorated front cover. Gothic revenge and romance run hand-and-hand in this Victorian work. A poor, beautiful smuggler falls in love with an Earl's grandson who is possessively loved by a lady of rank and wealth. Enter the best friend: an embittered artist obsessed with winning the lady of rank by foul means if by no other. Skullduggery abounds as he weaves his net of deceit. Garvice (1850-1920) was one of the most popular English writers of his time. "Garvice offered his own formula for success to R. D. Blumenfeld, who, in In the Days of Bicycles and Bustles, recorded: I have from Charles Garvice his secret of success in the making of a popular novel designed to cause every cook and housemaid in Europe and America to weep copiously. He says: "First take a wicked Earl; then an innocent village maiden; next some irate parents, a background of soldiers and sailors, a family solicitor and an elopement scene; a church door; snow falling, detectives, and finally Villainy defeated and Virtue triumphant. There's a firm in New York who would take one of these novels a week if I could furnish it. But, alas! I can only do about six a year!"
This work is app. 7”x5” with 341 pages. It has cloth covered hard-boards with a decorative cover and original dust-cover. This is in very good condition overall with some corner, edge, spine wear and bumping. There is much wear to the dust-cover as it is split in two and has foxing and tears, but it protected the book well. The hinges are not cracked. All pages are intact. There are names in ink on the blank pages. There is a little age toning. There are no offensive odors.
