This harder-to-find book is the 1868 first edition of Sir William Hooker and John Baker's book "Synopsis Filicum; or A Synopsis of All Known Ferns, including the Osmundaceae, Schizaeaceae, Marattiaceae, and Ophioglossaceae" and printed by Robert Hardwicke, London. "...which contains, besides brief diagnoses of the species described more in detail in that work, together with their geographical distribution as far as yet ascertained, such additions and corrections as have come to his knowledge, together with an account of the Sub-Orders Osmundaceae, Shizeaceae, Marattiaceae, and Ophioglossaceae. He does not , propose to include the Lycopodiaceae, Salviniaceae, Marsileaceae, Isoetaceae, and Equisetaceae, which differ much from these, and it may be said from each other, and which have of late engaged the study of several able monographers." This has 9 full page color plates inside. This is signed inside "L.A. Lowe G.S. Lowe Swellendam Cape Colony, Africa Mar. 17 1883" - "Lowe" is listed in the preface as one of the South African contributors to this work.
This is app. 9"x5.65" x 1.75" with 482 pages. It has dark green fabric over hardboards with gold gilt lettering on spine with gilt at top page edges. This is in very good condition overall with corner,edge,spine wear and bumping. There is a name in ink inside and address. The binding is tight and all pages intact. There is some age toning and some spotting. There are a few dried specimens of ferns inside. The last few pages have some old water/moisture damage at the top corner. There are no offensive odors.
