This old work is "Elementary English" by Robert Metcalf (Supervisor of Schools Boston) and Orville Bright (Superintendent of Schools Cook County, Ill). This was published by American Book Company with an 1895 copyright. "By means of pictures and suggested stories, many lessons have been made for the purpose of training the imagination, and also of increasing the power of the children to express their thoughts in English...In connection with these lessons, the best fables, fairy tales, and folk-stories should be read by the children, and then the stories should be retold by them in their own words....Many simple poems are given to be read and committed to memory...The mechanism of composition has not been neglected. The chapter on letter-writing gives all needed information concerning capital letters, punctuation, and forms...The last chapter in the book is devoted to grammar..." Selections for lessons are taken from nature, plants, geography, history and from famous authors and poets. There are exercises on sentences, pronunciation, verb forms, synonyms, singulars and plurals, proper names, letter writing, quotations, and more! This has lovely illustrations inside.
