This work is "The Amateur Gentleman" by Jeffrey Farnol and published by A.L. Burt Company. This is the May 1913 reprinted edition. This is illustrated with 4 illustrations by Herman Pfeifer. This regency era based romance/comedy/adventure is a story of a young man who wants so much to be a gentleman in spite of a father who is a tavern keeper and celebrated champion prizefighter of England. Barnabas, a young man of integrity, goes on a quest to find out what a gentleman is as his ardent wish is to become one. The book throws in satire and comedy along the way. Barnabas soon discovers that his preconceived notions of a gentleman are not the same as decadent London society's. On his quest he rescues a damsel above him in breeding to which he pledges his love. To London he goes to establish himself as a gentleman. He makes friends and deadly enemies along the way. Mystery, murder, and suspense are also thrown in.
This book is app. 7.5"x5" with 625 pages. This has cloth over hard-boards. This is in good condition overall with some corner, edge, spine wear and bumping. There is cloth wear at spine tips and corners. There is a little fading to the cloth, lettering on spine is faded, and some soiling. . The binding is tight and all pages intact. The book is complete.
