Whitby Jet comes from Whitby which is on the North Eastern coast of England. Jet is a natural material which has been formed over millions of years from coal. Whitby is the finest of the forms of jet and was greatly sought after. Whitby jet was carved and shaped into most forms of 19th century jewelry and most often seen in brooches. The very black color of jet was perfectly suited for the fashion for mourning jewelry, a fashion which was set by Queen Victoria following the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861.
Scarce today, especially in such early mourning jewelry, this brooch will be the highlight of your collection.
It is in the shape of an arrow with rounded beveled top, stepped down to the bevel carved point. Hand shaped beads comprise the rest of the pin. The pin is in very good condition with some aging of the pin itself and the backing as pictured. The central curved stone is intact but shows an old repair line on the face. It measures
approximately 3.5” long by ¾” which then tapers to the point.
