This small poker set features a deep green marbled Catalin Bakelite Case with Chips and Card slots. The set of chips is original but filled in with some old 1940s Dennison paper chips to top the set off to full. The case is in awesome condition as are the original chips. The added paper chips are also in very good condition as pictured. A really great example of the earlier plastics that are so in demand by collectors today.
For your information:
Bakelite and Catalin are different plastics, but are both commonly referred to as Bakelite. All of the "Bakelite" jewelry that you see is actually Catalin. Bakelite was generally only used for electrical appliances, handles on pots and coffee pots, etc. because it will not melt. Bakelite or Catalin exposed to open flames will only char. Sunlight causes the Catalin to yellow or "petina" and it shrinks over time. Bakelite was invented in 1907 and Catalin came in 1928. The use these plastics for everyday items were not used much after WWII dating Catalin from 1928 to1945
