This is one of my favorites, the isolation, loneliness, yet peaceful acceptance of watching over the tribe is the duty of the lone sentinel. His horse waits and watches patiently with him, the huge tree gives him shade and comfort.
All original, oil on board in excellent condition as pictured. This emotive and moving portrait of Native American live in the 19th century is signed by the artist Don Prechtel and dated (19) '73 in the lower right hand corner. The frame is original and perfectly balances the colors of the painting, measuring 22" by 26", image opening of the painting is 14" by `18".

This superb lifetime collection from the estate of an associate and long time friend of the artist Don Prechtel (1937) features outstanding examples of the artist’s early (professional artist since 1968), and mid era work. Well Listed, American Western Artist Don Prechtel is renowned for his historical accuracy, superb detail and character portrayed in his work. Born in Los Angeles, Prechtel has lived in Oregon since 1942. Prechtel had been drawing and painting since he was a child, always favoring the realistic, illustrative style of N.C. Wyeth. “I like to paint story-telling paintings,” he says. “I used to just paint landscapes. But you’ve got to get something in there that grabs you. And I think people want to know about their history.” He contributes much of his time to teaching children the love of art.

A biography of this famous artist can be found at the many galleries exhibiting his work, museums that have his work in their art collections, and at his own website. He is well listed including “Contemporary Western Artists”. He has been the subject of many articles, his work gracing the covers and interiors of a number of books, and he is also a major historical muralist hired by many universities, museums, and communities. He completed 4 massive murals for the new and remodeled wings of the Natural History Museum on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. His gallery oils of small size (5” by 7” example) sell $500-$1000. His large 3ft. to 4 ft. paintings sell in the range of $25,000, and his 16 by 30 and 24 by 24 sizes sell for between $4000 and $9000. His Civil War prints are extremely well known and sought after. Major recent Auction ranges for this size, oil on board/canvas, range $2000-$4000+.
