Jovan Obican is famous for his playful, childlike colorful paintings in a warm folk art style. Born in Cannes France in 1918, of Yugoslavian parents, he is best known for his depictions of folklore and colorful figural caricatures. He moved to the United States in 1959. He painted on paper and board in bright colors. He maintained studios in Boca Ratan, Florida, and Dubrovnik, Croatia (part of former Yugoslavia).
My client's father was a geologist. His father and mother were in South America and came across the Artist Jovan Obican. He painted this colorful acrylic on heavy paper for the couple. It is signed "Obican" in the lower right hand corner as pictured. His figural paintings have a playful childlike character. He painted animals and people in various trades or past times as well as later in life developed an interest in the Jewish people of Eastern Europe. Major auction prices and estimates range 1000-2000 for similar caricatures.
The painting is in very good condition as pictured. There is a thin line by the signature that I did not notice until it showed up in a closeup photograph. The acrylic painting measures 20" high by 16" wide and is loosely set in a half inch simple box frame under glass. It is loose so if you do not want the frame and glass, we can send it shipped flat for less shipping cost. Just let us know.
