This superbly crafted, paper mache head and bust doll with molded celluloid limbs is beautifully crafted and has a mark on the back of her head/neck that I can not distinguish. From researching her type, she dates somewhere between the 1880s and very early 20th century. She may be a French Valmore (Circa 1880s) or a German made by Otto Dressel, Kammer & Reinhart, Kestner, (or others that made this type to the early 20th Century. By 1903 they advertised a beautiful ‘bisque’ finish on the face and this doll has bisque like hand painted paper mache features. Her costume is so elaborate it is a possibility she was used as a milliner's model.

The celluloid arms and legs are joined to the body just above the knees and elbows. The doll's feet are pinned to the wooden base. Her costume all original, intricate, layered, with wonderful lace and trim. Her shawl is sewn to her dress which is sewn to her body. We have not disturbed her costume to find any other marks to preserve her originality. She is in lovely original condition with some age peeling to the finish enameling on one high heeled shoe. Her hair is white and human. Her headdress is high with fine lace and blue silk headdress. she has a small separation of the old velvet underskirt of less than an inch on a back seam. Her face is full of character, a superb antique doll in amazing condition, measuring 12 inches, 13 inches including the wooden base.

This doll was purchased from the estate an antique dealers personal lifetime collection of antiques dolls, miniatures, and antiques and collectibles.
