This beautiful antique Sterling silver hand chased Berry Casserole Spoon is Versailles by Gorham. It is part of a wedding set with one piece of the set dated 1895. My older reference book notes the patent date of the old Versailles pattern at 1885 but others put the patent date at 1888. The Gorham Versailles pattern was designed by Antone Heller and named for the palace at Versailles which was the residence of King Louis Xv of France. The designs which varied within the set were describes as 'scenes from the daily social lives of Versailles.
Deeply embossed, very heavy, this large berry or casserole spoon is finely hand chased in the bowl. It is not monogrammed and in very very fine condition as pictured. The modern version (last made 1991) is much less detailed with unadorned bowls and much less detailed as well as much lighter in weight. There is no comparison to the beauty and artistry of the original 19th Century original.
