This beautiful antique Sterling Silver flatware set is Versailles by Gorham. My older reference book notes the patent date at 1885 but others put the patent date at 1888. A part of the large set has a tablespoon marked on the back "January 14, 1895" The Versailles pattern was designed by Antone Heller and named for the palace at Versailles which was the residence of King Louis Xv of France. The designs were describes as 'scenes from the daily social lives of Versailles. The set that this is a part of came with mother of pearl knives which were the forerunner of the sterling handled metal blade knives. We have more of this huge set offered separately if you need more pieces.
This is not to be confused with the newer much lighter and less detailed versions, this antique set is deeply embossed with fine detail and very heavy.
There are 6 large Soup tablespoons, 12 place 6.75-7" dinner forks, 12 slightly smaller luncheon forks and 12 spoons. There is a very Gothic H monogram on the backs which also looks like an A or an R or a D depending on how you look at it. More part of the fine decoration on the backs as pictured. The condition is very fine, lovingly care for for over 100 years.
