Stunning Henri Alexandre Phenix Star Bebe Doll, Orig. Costume, Rare Jumeau Bebe Incassable Body This offering is for an original 20” Bebe Phenix doll created by Henri Alexandre in Paris between the years 1889 to 1892. In 1892 the company merged with the Tourrel Company which then joined Jules Steiner in 1895. Several beautiful Bebe Phenix models were created by the Alexandre doll company. This amazing doll is a “take your breath away” creation, especially considering her all original silk walking suit, and extraordinarily rare Jumeau Bebe Incassable 8 ball composition and wood body. The description follows.
HEAD: The doll’s extremely fine light colored pressed bisque swivel head has no damage and no restoration. The eyebrows are beautifully arched, feathered and are so long that they nearly meet in the middle of the doll’s forehead. Other facial features include her large almond shaped dark blue paperweight eyes w/ finely painted upper and lower lashes; deep nostrils with red accent dots; naturally blushed cheeks with no rubs; and, a closed mouth with a lovely shaded wistful smile. The high quality vintage wig is made of dark brown human hair, is parted in the middle without bangs and is styled with long beautiful curls. It is attached to its heavy original cardboard pate and is in excellent condition. The back of the head has the impressed *90 mark. . BODY: The doll’s “BEBE INCASSABLE” body is a very early French model made by Jumeau for the early Deluxe Portrait Jumeau dolls, c.1879. The Bebe Phenix dolls are generally found on their fully jointed original French composition body with straight wrists. Either the body was acquired by the Henri Alexandre Doll Maker Company or the original lesser quality French body suffered damage and was replaced by this body. If you question if the Jumeau body with its Alexandre Phenix Head is of lesser value, the simple answer is “NO.” The rare early 8 ball jointed Jumeau body is extremely valuable, worth many times the value of the ordinary French composition bodies. The body has its original paint with extremely minor chips to the side of one foot and one arm joint. The front of one foot has been repainted and may have had structural restoration. For the 135 year old complicated body, the condition is remarkably excellent. The “Bebe Incassable” bodies were made by Jumeau during the same time period as the Alexandre doll company created their models (1889-1892). The head fits perfectly on this body and gives no evidence of having the body replaced. Other French doll companies of that period, including Jumeau, supplied a variety of bodies for other doll makers’ doll heads, as in the case of this doll. The rare exceptional body adds greatly to the quality and value of the doll. The stringing is excellent so the doll poses easily in a variety of positions. The early body is sturdy and in exceptional original condition.
COSTUME: This doll is so remarkable, she wears her elaborate original silk grey striped two piece walking suit. It is styled with lace, embroidery and white satin pleats. There is minor melting of the silk fabric by the top of the skirt and the bottom of the jacket. Her undergarments consist of an antique full cotton slip and antique cotton pantaloons. Her antique cotton socks are lacy and she wears early made kid shoes. Her outfit is completed with an early straw hat decorated with flowers, leaves and lace. This amazing doll has been well cared for during her long life. It’s obvious little hands did not play with her and that she was most likely either displayed under glass or properly stored with great care. I have thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of this girl’s company over the years, but now it’s time for her to join another family.
