Gorgeous Petite Francais 24” Doll , Mohair Wig, Amazing Dress, Hand Embroidered 19th C. Apron, Antique Shoes
This offering is for a beautiful 24” Jules Verlingue, bisque head doll marked "Petite Francaise//FRANCE//J. (anchor) V. // 10." c. 1915-1920’s The doll has a beautiful bisque swivel neck head on a chunky body. She wears exquisite clothing including a 19th C. heavily hand embroidered lace apron which is of the finest quality and in immaculate condition. A complete description follow.
HEAD: The quality of this French bisque doll head is lovely—certainly far above the quality of most other bisque heads being made in France during the same time period. The bisque head has no factory flaws, chips, hairlines, or restoration. The only issue is a very tiny round rub on her left cheek. Otherwise the bisque is in perfect condition. The doll has very finely painted facial details and large brown paperweight eyes. Her open mouth has four upper square molded teeth. The doll wears a brown medium length mohair wig which complements those large dark brown eyes and her complexion. Please refer to the photos which are part of the description.
BODY: The body is quite chunky, sturdy and in very good condition. The original paint and finish is present except for the hands which were repainted. The ball joints also showed wear and were reinforced with a gray colored paint that fully restored surface wear on the joints. All the wood joints work smoothly. The stringing is nice and tight except for the knees where it is slightly loose. The doll is able to maintain a standing pose using a display stand and she is stable in a sitting pose. The body is marked “Germany 5” in red on the buttocks. During the time period that pre-dated World War One, there was a thriving exchange between France and Germany for heads and bodies. It is clear that the doll’s French made head has a perfect “hand-in-glove fit” with this chunky sturdy German made body. Several references, including “Doll Makers & Marks” by Dawn Herlocher note that Verlingue made bisque doll heads and all bisque bathing beauties. The company did not produce composition and wood doll bodies. Therefore, I’m perfectly comfortable stating that the doll itself is totally original.
CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES: This doll wears a gorgeous costume. Her replaced vintage dress is made of pure white lawn material. The bodice is covered with exquisite embroidery as are the cuffs and collar. The skirt is full and drapes beautifully to the ruffled hemline. The dress closes in the back with tiny buttons. The dress is in wonderful condition with no faults found. The piece de resistance is the rare exquisite original antique apron. The cream colored hand made apron is heavily decorated with ornate white work embroidery. The apron is entirely covered with embroidered lace, has a lace hemline and white silk ties that were hand sewn onto the body of the apron. The condition is excellent, with no damage of any type, discoloration or mends. The undergarments consist of vintage bloomers and a full length cream colored cotton slip. Dolly wears replaced thigh high stockings and original delicate French shoes. The delicate cream colored shoes are ribbon tied and have blue colored applied fabric flowers. The back seam on one shoe has a split that has been repaired with paper tape. She is display ready and is fully guaranteed to meet your expectations.
