Japanese Musha Ningyo Armored Samurai Warrior on Warhorse This presentation represents a Japanese Musha Ningyo Samurai warrior of the Meiji Period (1860-1912). Measurements: Warrior, 7 1/2" high x 4" wide at feet; Horse 8" long x 8 1/2"; Height of warrior seated on horse 12". It was made to celebrate “Boys Day” on May 5th of each year. Many of the traits that are celebrated on the holiday are related to those of the Samurai Warrior, so this would have been given as a gift to a young boy years ago to celebrate the important holiday. The figure’s Samurai warrior is shown riding a battle horse in full dress. The horse with rider is mounted on a black lacquered display stand. All pieces are original. Because similar war horses have been made up to and including the present time, finding an all original presentation is a challenge. This offering dates to the late 1920’s during the Taisho Period. This Samurai warrior has a rigid sitting position in order to ride the war horse. His gofun face has inset black glass eyes. The warrior wears full battle regalia and holds the handle of his katana sword in his right hand. His boots fit the stirrups on the horse for a secure display. He wears bright blue painted gloves—not seen on later models. The white horse is made of wood, paper mache, silk, leather, and hair. Gray paint is present on the lower 2/3 of the legs. Later horses have less gray to almost an absence of gray on the legs. The hoofs are well formed and have no missing pieces. The horse has inset amber glass eyes, whereas later models have applied glass eyes. The mane is full and has a tuft on the horse’s forehead. The muzzle is painted gray—later models, for the most part, have white muzzles. The once full tail is long and has become tangled over the years. Later horses have artificial appearing manes and thin straight tails. The white color of the horse has darkened to a light yellowish color on some portions—strictly from age. One ear has gone missing and there are a few tight cracks on the gray portions of the legs and a chip on a hoof. The saddle, blanket, fender, stirrup and dark orange fringe are all original. All these items are present on the right side and in excellent condition. The fender and stirrup are missing on the left side. The battle must have been very hard! While the condition of the horse is not perfect, the imperfections are all age related and distinguish the presentation from later made models. The Samurai warrior is in excellent condition. The display stand has a few minor scrapes. This presentation was a good buy years ago so I’m passing my good fortune on to the buyer. Please contact me if you have any questions.
