This 1008 page book was written in 1875, and revised slightly in this 1895 edition. The author, Dr. R.V. Pierce, ran a huge medicine dispensary and the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute in Buffalo, New York. The "hotel", really a hospital, was a huge building, and employed many doctors and surgeons. This book, covers most of the diseases and maladies of mankind, and gives treatment suggestions- using, of course, pills and concoctions made in his Dispensary. The "Invalids' Hotel" apparently employed many electric quack devices. Some of his treatments are right on, some a bit quacky. The book is small, 5-1/2" x 7-1/2", and has many engraved illustrations. There are even a few pages of colored drawings, a bit crude. Each chapter is ended with many ages of testimonials from satisfied patients cured by the good doctor- mostly with his snake-oil concoctions. His "Pierce's Pleasant Pellets" seem to cure most everything.
CONDITION- Covers show wear, but pages still firmly attached. The title pages and index seem to be missing, or perhaps it never had them.. Otherwise complete. Pages slightly yellowed with age but not brittle. Very readable. There is a lengthy appendix, mainly about his Invalids' Hotel and pill factory. There is an index and vocabulary.
The book is fascinating reading- and may even help cure your dyspepsia and catarrh.
