Circa 1890's, American, Egg Shaped, Victorian Glass, Salt Shaker by Mount Washington
Founded in 1837, the Mt. Washington Glass Works was originally located in South Boston. The company was located near a small hill known as "Mt. Washington". During the 1860's, the South Boston factory was deteriorating. In 1870, the company relocated to New Bedford, MA. At the new location, the company produced a wide range of pressed glass, fine cut and engraved glass, lighting and other items. The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was a small Britannia metal works. The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was located next door to Mount Washington Glassworks. The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company supplied Mt. Washington with attractive silver-plated metal mounts. In 1894, the two companies merged. The Pairpoint Mfg. Co consolidated with the Mt. Washington Glass Company. Around 1900, The Pairpoint Mfg. Co. gradually phased out the Mt. Washington name. The Pairpoint Corporation was the name of the new company. Today, an offshoot of the original company, Pairpoint Glass Works, Inc. operates in Sagamore, MA.
Mount Washington manufactured this outstanding, white, opaque, satin glass salt shaker. Pastel pink and green colored, Art Nouveau style leaves and vines encircle this classic, mold blown shaker. The pretty, large sized leaves are extremely well detailed. The flowing branches of green and pale pink colored leaves stand out against the white, satin glass. The bottom of this shaker is marked. Unfortunately, the mark is faded and difficult to decipher. Most shakers produced during this period are not marked. The cap is original and in excellent condition. The threading on the lid and the neck of the shaker is intact with no stripping. The threading is in need of a good cleaning. I have not cleaned this piece. I feel once the threading is clean it will screw on much more easily. The cap does screw and unscrew. The rim has the usual roughness inherent to older, mold blown glass. To be safe I will say that there are a few, tiny, scratches on the glass and the rim has a few minor chips, both normal for the age and use of this shaker. There is one TINY ding to the glass. There is a seam line in the glass. The seam lines are from the original manufacturing. The lines in the glass are difficult to see in the photographs. I prefer to be safe and describe all aspects of this charming shaker. This elegant shaker is still a fantastic treasure even with its minor flaws. The scratches and ding are minor and do not detract from the shakers value. I am selling this shaker in "as is" condition. I have priced this shaker at an extremely low cost to make up for the minor flaws. The tiny scratches are not noticeable unless you examine the shaker in detail. In the photographs, everything is magnified. This is a no harm flaw. I am extremely particular and I ALWAYS try to mention EVERY, TINY detail. I prefer to be overly cautious then to have an unhappy customer. Otherwise, this lovely shaker is in good condition. There are no other DINGS, DENTS, REPAIRS, CHIPS, FLAKES, or CRACKS. This gorgeous salt shaker would make a great display piece. This glorious shaker measures approximately 2 ½ inches in height. This charming shaker is a perfect gift idea for the Mount Washington collector. The holidays are just around the corner. This wonderful salt shaker is a great gift idea for that special loved one for the holidays. This timeless treasure would be a perfect stocking stuffer. ***PLEASE NOTE: PayPal Payments due within 48 hours of purchase. *** ALL shipping costs are included!
