Perfectly tailored vintage 1880's Victorian Jacket, or Equestrian Jacket. Designer A. L. Bowhay .. he was referred to as the California "Worth". If you collect the best of the best in vintage clothing, you do not want to miss this. Plus, it is a wonderful piece of San Francisco "pre-earthquake" Victorian history.

~A. L. Bowhay label

~Quality of the wool, and the tailoring is perfection.

~Probably from a riding or equestrian ensemble. This is due to its simpler, and almost "man" tailored style in the front. Otherwise this very fitted jacket with the little flounce piece (meant to go over the bustle) is classic to the look of the 1880s.

~Fully boned, buttons up front

~Extra long sleeves that were meant to be ruched.

~Notched collar.

Truly the finest quality tailoring!

ABOUT "A. L. Bowhay is the ladies tailor par excellence of San Francisco, and no name is more widely known in the exclusive circles of the "four hundred." Mr. Bowhay is frequently referred to as the California Worth, and his reputaion as an originator of elegant and picturesque costumes is second only to the famous Parisian. Mr. Bowhay's clientele is confined exclusively to the most prominent society ladies of San Francisco and neighboring cities. He imports his cloths direct from Paris and handles only the finest. His costumes range in price from $75 (equivalent to over $2000 today) as high as the taste and purses of his patrons may dictate." (source historic 1892 Google e-book)

CONDITION: very good condition....there is a small moth hole on the sleeve, and some tracks on the wool that do not really show...these are from the moth damage. Please see image. Also in our opinion this really does not detract from the pristine appearance of this jacket.
