Vintage 7 ½” Mary Hartline doll, circa 1952, was created as a result of a popular Saturday morning TV show, Super Circus. Mary, the bandleader, was hailed as “Television’s Beautiful Circus Princess”. Although the Mary Hartline dolls were manufactured mainly by Ideal and marked accordingly, some dolls were produced by different manufacturers, used as advertising promotions and not marked. This doll is unmarked.
This Mary Hartline doll, like the similarly sized dolls marked Ideal, is made of hard plastic with fixed legs, jointed neck and arms. She has a blonde glued-on wig, blue sleepy eyes, painted lashes, molded painted-on boots and measures slightly under 7 ½ inches. Her red cotton costume with matching attached shorts is stenciled with a music staff, name and heart onto the fabric. Two original buttons are firmly attached to the back of the outfit. The outfit is in excellent condition. There is a bit of glue residue on her face near the red felt heart. Her right leg has a seam split and her feet are not quite level making it difficult to stand the doll on its own. Her head occasionally pulls slightly to the left, but will hold on center. Nevertheless this Mary Hartline doll is quite cute and would be a nice addition to someone’s doll collection.
