This beautiful authentic ancient gold coin depicts Justin II who was emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 565 to 578. Justin II became emperor in 565 after the death of his uncle Justinian I. The coin is 22K and the bezel acid tests 18K. The coin with the bezel measures 3/4" in diameter. The chain is 14K and 15 1/2" in length. During his reign as Emperor, Justin II became mentally ill and appointed Tiberius as regent for 4 years but at the end of September, 578, the emperor's condition worsened and Tiberius was raised to the rank of Augustus and co-emperor. Justin II died shortly afterward. The Empress Sophia, who is prominent on the coinage, exercised considerable political influence throughout her husband's reign, including the regency of Tiberius. This is an important coin which depicts a significant part of Roman history as well as being a fine example of coinage from the Byzantine Era.
