This is a very fine example of a Victorian Era French bronze inkwell. It is Circa 1880 and is mounted on the original marble base. There are full bodied cherubs on each side holding up a bronze urn shaped inkwell. The cover of the inkwell has a unique design with two gargoyle heads on each side. It measures 6 1/4" tall and 4" across the marble base. Considering the age of this piece , the condition is quite good. It retains an excellent bronze patina with a few small flake sized chips to the bottom of the marble base and the hinged cover opens and closes with the interior black from ink as it should be because this inkwell was well used. The entire bronze piece including the cherubs are very detailed. This is a fine example of French artistry from an elegant bygone era.
