This large exquisite silver box was found in an antique shop in Lisbon, Portugal. It is Portugese silver from the Austro-Hungarian period. It is Circa 1890 and has a very ornate rococo design that encompasses the entire box. In the middle of the cover is a lovely hand painted and artist signed scene of two lovers in a garden setting. The cover locks and retains the original key. The piece is hallmarked in three separate areas, please refer to photos. Portugal silver hallmarks were from 1886 to 1938. Both eagle and boar were used during this time period, cartouche shape changed to indicate the city of assay. In 1938, the Roman Numerals below the eagles's head changed to Arabic Numerals and the boar hallmark was retired. The interior cover has the original bevelled mirror and lining showing normal wear. It is amazing to find a lovely piece with this much age that is completely original and untouched. A very special jewel casket from an elegant bygone era.
