We are very pleased to offer a fabulous, large sterling silver and genuine cairngorm quartz stone shoulder brooch. This beautiful pin is from Scotland and comes in the original case as found with documentation from the original owner.
This lovely brooch was used to hold the tartan stole in place at the shoulder of its wearer. The pin is round with a scalloped edge, gorgeous thistle heads, open work and very finely detailed decoration. The centerpiece is a beautifully cut natural Cairngorm stone. The stone was mined in the Grampian Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. "Cairngorm" is one of the peaks in this mountain range.
According to the documentation, this piece was purchased from Marshall Field & Company "Field's Afar" section. As the name suggests, this section of the store featured expensive and often rare items from around the world as well as jewelry, silver and other unique items from estate sales. The note further confirms the authenticity of the piece and states the brooch dates to circa 1875.
This grand piece measures approximately 4" in diameter and its domed shape stands approximately 3/4" high. The cairngorm measures approximately 1" in diameter. The closure is an extra long and heavy duty pin with "C" closure and tube and barrel construction. The sturdy pin has a slight bend. The brooch is unmarked and has tested positive for sterling silver. It is in very good condition with patina as found. We have not cleaned or polished the piece. The total weight is 108.9 grams or 3.84 ounces.
